Black Horse Voluntary Termination: How to Hand Your Car Back
Black Horse is one of the UK's biggest car finance lenders, part of Lloyds Banking Group. It also finances cars under other names: Land Rover Financial Services, for example, is a trading name of Black Horse Limited.
If your agreement is with Black Horse and you want to hand the car back early, this page covers exactly how Black Horse runs the process, based on its own published guidance. For how Voluntary Termination works in general (the 50% rule, what counts towards it, and excess mileage), see our complete Voluntary Termination guide.
Can you VT with Black Horse?
Yes, if your agreement is regulated by the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Black Horse says you can voluntarily terminate "at any point before your agreement ends and return the vehicle to us".
The one exception Black Horse lists: the right isn't available if the agreement is in the name of an LLP or limited company.
Step by step: how Black Horse handles VT
Black Horse runs VT mainly through its online account:
- Check your VT figure. Log in to your online account (or set one up). On your dashboard, under "My agreement", select "View details". Your VT figure is shown under "Agreement information".
- Request your VT pack. Select "End your agreement early", then "Voluntary termination". Black Horse sends a letter showing what you'd need to pay to VT and how it worked that out.
- Sign and return the VT form. If you want to go ahead, sign the form and email or post it back. This signed form is your written request to terminate.
- Collection. Black Horse asks British Car Auctions Logistics (BCA), or another agent, to call or text you to arrange collecting the car.
- Pay any balance within 30 days. If you owe anything, you have 30 days to pay it, by debit card through your online account. Black Horse doesn't accept credit cards for this.
Black Horse notes that selling the car at auction "can take a few weeks".
What you might still have to pay
Black Horse is clear that VT "may not be free". The amount you've already paid decides whether there's anything left to pay. If you haven't reached 50% of the total amount payable, you pay the difference. Our Voluntary Termination calculator guide shows how to work that out.
Black Horse also says some things must be paid in full on top, even if you've passed 50%:
- insurance products added to the agreement
- optional extras
- any part-exchange shortfall that was added to the finance
Damage beyond fair wear and tear can also be charged. Excess mileage depends on what your agreement says: see the mileage section of our VT guide.
Your credit file
Black Horse tells the credit reference agencies about a VT so they can update your file. Done properly, a completed VT isn't treated as negative: the Financial Ombudsman has said it "wouldn't be considered to be negative information" once the required payment has been made.
The risk is an unpaid balance. Black Horse says that if you don't pay what you owe within 30 days, it "will register a default with credit reference agents", which "could affect your credit score". The Financial Ombudsman has backed that approach. In a 2025 case involving Land Rover Financial Services (Black Horse), a driver who didn't pay the £21,007 owed after a VT was left with a default, and the ombudsman wouldn't order it removed (DRN-5222169).
If you can't pay the balance in one go, contact Black Horse about a payment plan before the 30 days run out. Our VT guide has more on how VT affects your credit file.

FAQs
Can Black Horse refuse my Voluntary Termination?
Not if your agreement is regulated by the Consumer Credit Act and isn't in the name of an LLP or limited company. VT is a legal right under Section 99 of the Act.
How long do I have to pay any balance after a Black Horse VT?
30 days. If it isn't paid by then, Black Horse says it will register a default with the credit reference agencies.
Do I need to write a letter to Black Horse?
Black Horse's process uses a VT form that you sign and return by email or post, which acts as your written notice. Keep a copy of the signed form and any confirmation you receive.
